Toledo Repertorie Theatre
The mission of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre, founded in 1933, is to educate, entertain and serve Toledo and the surrounding region through live theater. The Rep, which splits its stage time between The Valentine Theatre and The 10th Street Theatre, began as a membership-only theater. By the 1960s, productions were opened to the general public and a full-time artistic director was hired. At the time, the organization was still known by its original name, The Repertoire Little Theatre. The Toledo Rep has been known for its community service to both youth and adults from its inception, when it offered one-on-one drama lessons. The '50s and '60s featured one-act productions for novice actors and student directors, and during the last 30 years, The Rep has added several important and extremely popular components to its programming roster. They include: The Mainstage & Studio Season, an ambitious selection of works ranging from innovative, thought-provoking dramas to toe- tapping musicals; The Young Playgoers Series, a touring company that presents shows with built-in educational themes in schools and other locations throughout northwest Ohio; and The Young Rep, featuring theater classes for kids 5 to 17. More than 500 students take part in these classes yearly -- they are taught theater skills that provide them with the confidence to meet real- world challenges. Combined audience numbers for the Toledo Rep now exceed 100,000 annually.
